VOL 1. NO. 5 · F-14 Tomcat USS Ranger Carrier Deck Poster (1989)

Regular price

North Arabian Sea, 1989. Minutes before launch, an F-14A Tomcat from U.S. Navy Fighter Squadron Two (VF-2) taxis across the flight deck of USS Ranger (CV-61), precisely guided toward the catapult by a Yellow Shirt.

The photograph captures the organised chaos of a working carrier deck. Sailors surround the Tomcat, each performing a specific role while the aircraft moves between them. At the centre, the Yellow Shirt’s raised arms direct over 30 tonnes of fighter through a language of hand signals, understood instantly over the noise of engines, wind and machinery.

Against the dark clouds, sunlight briefly catches the Tomcat and its crew, leaving behind a photograph that feels almost like a Renaissance painting: dramatic light, deep shadow, and human figures gathered around the machine at its centre.
