VOL 1. NO. 6
Northern Persian Gulf, 1998. An F-14A Tomcat from the Fighting Checkmates of U.S. Navy Fighter Squadron 211 (VF-211) sits seconds from launch aboard USS Nimitz (CVN-68), headed for an Operation Southern Watch mission.
The Tomcat is already in Zone 5, full afterburner, as the final moments of the launch sequence unfold around it. Navigation lights spill red across the aircraft and flight deck, while the green glow of a flight deck director’s illuminated wands traces through the exposure, giving the scene an atmosphere that feels almost unreal.
The photograph captures that brief threshold between stillness and extraordinary acceleration. For a few seconds, the aircraft is restrained on deck, engines at full power and crew clear of its path. Then the catapult fires, and the Tomcat disappears into the night.
